Shuttering vs Scaffolding: Understanding the Difference
Shuttering and scaffolding are often confused — even by people in the construction industry. They serve entirely different purposes and require different materials. This guide clears up the confusion once and for all.
What is Scaffolding?
Scaffolding is a temporary access structure. It provides a safe working platform for construction workers, gives them access to work at height, and supports the tools and materials needed for the task. Scaffolding consists of vertical standards, horizontal ledgers, diagonal braces, and platform boards or planks. Once the work at height is complete, the scaffolding is dismantled and removed. Scaffolding does NOT come into contact with concrete.
What is Shuttering (Formwork)?
Shuttering is a temporary mould — it gives wet concrete its shape while it cures. When you pour a slab, beam, or column, the wet concrete needs to be contained and supported until it is strong enough to hold its own weight. Shuttering plates, props, and channels form this mould. Once the concrete has cured (typically 21–28 days for full strength), the shuttering is removed (this process is called de-shuttering or striking). Shuttering comes into direct contact with concrete and determines the surface finish.
Why They Are Often Used Together
On a typical floor slab project, shuttering plates form the bottom face of the slab, adjustable props support the shuttering from below, and steel channels distribute the prop loads. Separately, scaffolding may be erected around the building's exterior for workers to access beam and column formwork at height. Both systems are present simultaneously, which is why they are often discussed together — but they are serving completely different functions.
Material Differences
Shuttering materials must have a smooth face for concrete contact — our shuttering plates are smooth-faced steel that produce a clean concrete finish. Scaffolding materials are structural tubes and fittings designed for load-bearing, not surface finish. Using scaffolding tubes as makeshift shuttering support is dangerous and produces poor concrete finish. Always use the right material for the right purpose.
