Construction Site Safety Checklist for Scaffolding Operations
A comprehensive safety checklist for site supervisors managing scaffolding installations. Covers pre-erection inspection, load verification, daily checks and emergency procedures.
Before Erection: Material Inspection
Before any scaffolding goes up, inspect every component. Check standards for bends — any standard bent more than 3mm over 1m length must be rejected. Inspect couplers for cracked or deformed bodies, worn pins, and seized threads. Verify base plates are flat and free of cracks. Check ledgers for damaged blade ends that won't seat correctly in cups. Document rejected pieces and return them — do not put them aside for later use.
Foundation and Base Preparation
The most overlooked aspect of scaffolding safety is the foundation. Base plates must rest on firm, level ground. On soft soil, use sole boards (225mm × 38mm minimum timber) under each base plate to distribute the load. On existing slabs, verify the slab can take the concentrated point loads — propping loads on a 1.8m bay with 3.5 kN/m² live load can exceed 15 kN per standard. Never place scaffolding base plates in waterlogged or freshly excavated ground.
Daily Inspection Points
Every morning before work begins, the designated scaffolding supervisor should check: (1) No standards have settled or tilted overnight. (2) All couplers remain fully tightened — pay attention to right-angle couplers near loading points. (3) No bracing has been removed to create a passage (a common and dangerous field shortcut). (4) Working platforms have no gaps exceeding 25mm between boards. (5) Edge protection — guard rails at 1.0m and toe boards at 150mm are in place wherever there is a drop exceeding 2m.
Load Control
Overloading is a primary cause of scaffolding failure. Post load limits visibly on the scaffold. Common limits: light duty (mobile access) 0.75 kN/m², general access 1.5 kN/m², heavy duty (material storage) 3.0 kN/m². Never allow concrete skips, mortar drums, or brick pallets to be placed on access scaffolding not rated for it. Prohibit simultaneous loading of adjacent bays without engineering approval.
Emergency Procedures
Every site must have a documented scaffold emergency procedure. Key points: (1) Any worker who notices an unusual movement, noise, or visible deformation must immediately evacuate the area and report to the supervisor — no heroics. (2) The area below and around the scaffold must be cordoned off immediately. (3) Contact your scaffolding supplier — we are available 24/7 for emergency support. (4) Do not re-enter or attempt to stabilise the structure without qualified assessment. Document the incident with photographs before any remedial work begins.
