How to Choose the Right Shuttering Material for Your Project
Selecting the wrong shuttering material can lead to concrete defects, cost overruns and delays. This guide helps contractors and engineers choose between steel plates, props and channel configurations for different slab types.
Steel vs Plywood Shuttering
Plywood shuttering is cheap upfront but degrades quickly — typically 8–12 uses before warping affects surface finish. Steel shuttering plates are a higher initial investment (or rental cost) but last hundreds of cycles, produce a superior concrete finish, and are dimensionally stable across temperature and humidity changes. For projects with more than 3–4 pours at the same location, steel shuttering consistently delivers lower cost per pour.
Choosing the Right Plate Size
Our steel shuttering plates come in three standard sizes: 3×2 ft (914×610mm), 3×1.5 ft (914×457mm), and 3×1 ft (914×305mm). The 3×2 is the workhorse for open slabs and beam soffits. The 3×1.5 is ideal for column boxes and medium beams. The 3×1 is used for narrow columns, pile caps, and closing panels. Mixing sizes is common — most contractors use 3×2 as the field, 3×1.5 for the edges, and 3×1 for corners and closures.
Adjustable Props: Selecting the Right Type
Props are specified by their extended range: 2+2 (1.5m to 3.0m extended), 2+3 (1.8m to 3.3m), and 3+3 (2.5m to 4.0m). The most common specification error is using 2+2 props at near-maximum extension for high-bay construction — a prop at 90% of its maximum extension has significantly reduced load capacity. Use the next size up and keep all props below 75% of maximum extension wherever possible.
Steel Channels: Primary Beams and Secondary Bearers
Steel channels (C-channels or I-sections) span across the prop heads to carry the shuttering plates. The channel span determines the prop grid: an 8-foot channel can span up to 2.4m between prop lines, a 10-foot channel up to 3.0m. Heavier slabs require closer prop spacing regardless of channel capacity — always verify against the structural loading before finalising the layout.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
1. Reusing plates without cleaning — concrete buildup causes plate bow and difficult stripping. 2. Over-tightening wing nuts on column boxes — this distorts the plate edge and causes concrete leakage. 3. Inadequate chamfer strips at corners — leads to spalling during stripping. 4. Not accounting for slab step-downs in prop height — props on different slab levels need different size selection. A quick checklist before any order: maximum slab thickness, maximum bay span, pour height for columns, and floor-to-soffit height.
